Julie's story
Julie* was only 16 years old when her Dad brutally assaulted her. She spiralled into 4 years of depression and self-destructive behaviour. After an unsuccessful 5 week rehabilitation program in hospital and later re-admittance for a drug overdose, Julie was referred by a Social Worker to Triple Care Farm. After 3 months at Triple Care Farm, Julie was drug free and excited about her future. Years later, Julie is still maintaining a healthy and independent life with a full time job and living free from her drug addictions.
Julie shares her story...
“It started in July 2006. I was depressed and needed an escape. I welcomed drugs with open arms. I tried many different drugs. After that, I would drink to the point of death. I lied my way to getting Valium which I became addicted to. 5 weeks in hospital without drugs sent me crazy; the day I got out I went on a bender I would forget. My birthday came, 18 at last. The worst thing to happen to me was that drugs and alcohol became more available. I was sent to hospital again and I met the person that saved me. I was referred to Mission Australia’s Triple Care Farm.
It would be 2 months before I made the call. I was scared of withdrawals and more. Finally I made the phone call that changed my life. By May I started on the road to recovery. It was a long and hard road with sleepless nights, bouts of sadness, missing friends and family. But the people on the farm became my family and it was not long before the farm became my home.
Amazingly each day my self esteem would rise, just a little. I was smiling and not a fake forced smile. A real smile! Every day was a day of self discovery. I am writing this story on my last week at the farm. Here I have been given a second chance. Never take anything for granted. Thank you Triple Care Farm. I am happy, alive, healthy, and look to the future with hope and wisdom. I will leave you with this….life is amazing, so make it amazing.”
