SPOTLIGHT ON AFRICAN PATHWAYS PROGRAM
- Program Information
The African Pathways program, an early intervention project, based in the Northern Metropolitan region of Melbourne supports students and families from African refugee backgrounds, to make positive transitions from primary to high school to assist with the successful settlement and participation of families and communities in the local area.
This is achieved through its program delivery, community education, advocacy, and collaborative partnerships with Melbourne University, local schools and the community. The two specific programs; learning club/s for grade 5-6’s and the soccer program targeting grade 2-6 in 2 local schools, are well supported by 27 dedicated volunteers who make up a diverse group from a range of ages and cultural backgrounds. Bringing with them their relevant work, study and life experiences, all the volunteers share the same commitment of wanting to make a difference both in their own lives and those of others.
Under the guidance and direction of our project team including: Melbourne University researchers, Mission’s project coordinators, and our qualified and experienced teachers and recreation instructor, the volunteers work together with students, to support and prepare them for high school through activities which enhance students’ academic learning, understanding of the education system, physical fitness and abilities, general life skills and knowledge, confidence and team work.
Operating from an inclusive framework, the program encourages and assists students from all backgrounds to work positively together to promote a learning environment which supports diversity, encourages shared learning experiences and strengthens relationships and understanding between all students, families and volunteers.
